The Last Present

Well, the family made it through yet another Christmas. Just barely. No one really liked their gifts, but no one complained — it’s tradition. No one wanted to be there, of course, but didn’t have anywhere else to be especially. And so they just sat there, relieved it was all over finally. Or so they thought.

Tucked under the tree – way in the back corner – sat the prettiest little box you have ever seen. We wouldn’t have even noticed it if dad hadn’t been in such a hurry to take the tree down and get on with life. It was unsent and apparently unclaimed – with no name tag attached. It must have fallen off in all the confusion.

The gold gift-wrap had the whole family stumped. Usually you could tell who sent the gift based solely upon the wrapping skill used in taping it together. But this gift was so thoughtfully wrapped that it couldn’t have come from anyone sitting in the room.

What excitement that little bundle generated! Was it a gift from Santa himself, the children wondered? Or that one present each person really wanted but didn’t receive? We passed this fancy box around to each other, doing our best to guess the contents and recipient. It was the only gift we ever cared to know what was inside.

But we never did open it. We kept it under the tree every year since as tradition. It was the best gift our family could have ever received. It was in that unopened box that we found our Christmas again.
